FC Barcelona renews Biosphere certification of responsibility to society and the environment

Club and museum recognised for the second consecutive year for its alignment with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations 2030 Agenda

FC Barcelona has renewed its Biosphere certification that verifies that both the club and museum develop their goods and services in accordance with a model that is responsible for society and the environment, all part of the club's ongoing endeavours to encourage sustainable development in all its areas of action, and to uphold its high standards in order to obtain or, in this case, renew leading certifications in terms of sustainability.

The Biosphere certification is aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations 2030 Agenda and is issued by the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR), an independent organisation created in 1995 with the objective of promoting sustainable development actions and programmes. The ITR is supported by UNESCO and is a founding member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) sponsored by the United Nations Foundation. Since 2017, Biosphere has been the top sustainability certification system worldwide.

For the second consecutive year, both the club and museum have been recognised for reporting positive indicators on matters such as climate change, sustainable energy, water, biodiversity, responsible protection and consumption, sustainable infrastructure, sustainable tourist destinations, cultural heritage, economic and inclusive development, well-being, health and safety, promotion of inclusive and quality training, gender equality and female empowerment, the reduction of inequalities and decent work conditions, among others.

It should be noted that as an essential criterion to renew the certification, at least three improvement actions must be verified. In the case of FC Barcelona, these have been: the calculation of the carbon footprint, the promotion of healthy menus for workers and visitors to its facilities, the existence of an inclusive language guide and the application of light sensors in the bathrooms, especially in the museum, to promote energy efficiency.

Constant work to promote sustainable ideas

Sustainability is one of the core issues of the 2026 Strategic Plan, and in different areas: non-financial economic, governance, sports, social and environmental. In accordance with this approach, the club continues to promote sustainable initiatives, such as those being applied to the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou and the design of the Espai Barça. These are having a direct impact in terms of energy, water, waste and preservation of biodiversity, and will not only be applied to the club's facilities in Les Corts but also at the Ciutat Esportiva training complex.
