25th clean sheet equals Chelsea's 2004/05 record

Another shutout against Osasuna continues this history-making season for Ter Stegen and his defence

FC Barcelona's amazing defensive record continued on Tuesday with yet another zero in the goals against column, this time after beating Osasuna 1-0. That's 25 clean sheets now in La Liga, matching the amazing figure achieved by Chelsea under José Mourinho in 2004/05, which until now was the most clean sheets for any team this century in Europe's 'big five' leagues. And there are still five chances to extend the number further.

Tuesday's result has already set a brand new Liga record since the turn of the century. The 4-0 defeat of Real Betis on Saturday meant Barça had matched Atlético Madrid's tally of 24 in 2015/16. Now they have gone one better. No team had ever completed 25 shutouts in the same Liga season this century.

All-time record in sight

But it's still not the all-time Liga record. That one still belongs to Deportivo La Coruña, who in 1993/94, with Paco Liaño in goal, managed to complete a staggering 26 clean sheets. Barça still have games against Espanyol, Real Sociedad, Valladolid, Mallorca and Celta in which to match or even beat that number.

11 goals against

Barça have still only conceded 11 times in total this season, and could still beat their previous record of 18 goals against in 1968/69, and that was in a time when teams only played 30 games as opposed to the 38 today.

The lowest goals against figure ever in La Liga was the 15 let in by Real Madrid in 1931/32, when there were only 18 games a season. Amazingly, Barça are still on course to beat that, despite playing more than twice as many games!

The record this century in any of the top five leagues in Europe is the 15 conceded by Chelsea in 2004/05, with Petr Cech in nets. Barça still have a strong chance of beating that record, it all depends on what happens in these last five games.
