Magdeburg 33-28 Barça: Sixth Super Globe will have to wait

The Germans win the title for the first time after proving just a little bit too good on the day

The sixth Super Globe will have to wait. Barça, winners of five of the last seven editions of handball’s world club championship, have lost Saturday’s final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Magdeburg: 33-28.

It was a frenetic game from start to finish, but the Catalans couldn’t quite keep up with the pace of the Germans, who have claimed their first title.

Barça led by two midway through the first half, but when rival keeper Green found his finest form, the lead had switched hands by the break.

Barça tried to react but instead found themselves trailing by four, and Magdeburg showed no signs of flaking. Barça did all they could to mount a late comeback, but they will not be returning to Catalonia with the trophy.
