Piqué scores first goal of the season

Centre back gets FC Barcelona's first goal of La Liga 2021/22, following on from Ansu Fati, who had the honour in the previous campaign

Gerard Piqué had the honour of scoring Barça’s first official goal of the 2021/21 season when he headed in an 18th minute assist from debutant Memphis Depay against Real Sociedad.

It was also the centre back’s fiftieth goal for the team, and came on the day that fans were finally back into the Camp Nou.

Piqué has shown this week just what an example he sets both on and off the pitch, and played a crucial role on Sunday night by marshalling a new-look back four that included two debutants: Eric García from the start and Royal too after the Brazilian came on as a substitute.

Pique led the team for passes, 75, in a week in which the reduction in his salary proved hugely important for ensuring that other players could be registered in time to compete.

"I had to help the club" he said after the game.
