Griezmann going for Euro goals

Barça striker scored six goals at Euro 2016 and a similar performance this year could potentially rewrite the history books

Antoine Griezmann and France, current World Cup champions and runners-up at Euro 2016, begin their assault on Euro 2020 tonight at 9.00am CEST against another global heavyweight, Germany. Nothing would please the Barça star more than the Henri Delaunay trophy, but he has other targets to aim for too.

Griezmann has only played at this competition once in the past, when France lost the final on home soil to Portugal. But he finished the tournament as top scorer with six goals in seven games, an average of 0.86 goals a game.

Top scorers at the Euros

That was enough to make him the joint fourth highest goalscorer in the history of the finals. His compatriot Michel Platini (who scored all nine of his goals in 1984) and Cristiano Ronaldo (who has scored nine goals across four different tournaments) currently lead the way. Ronaldo, of course, is playing again this year, and in the same group as Griezmann.

Alan Shearer of England is currently third with seven, so Griezmann needs just one goal to match him - and from then on, who knows what history he might make over the next few weeks?
