Messi matches Müller and Eusebio

Seventh top goalscorer trophy means the Argentinian has equalled the German and Portuguese legends

What’s more, it was his fourth in a row, equalling the record set by Mexican Hugo Sánchez.

The Argentinian has also matched two of Europe’s most formidable goalscorers of all time, Gerd Müller and Eusebio.

The German was top goalscorer in the Bundesliga seven times, all as a Bayern Munich player between 1966 and 1978. Eusebio was also a top scorer seven times, this time for Benfica in Portugal, from 1963 to 1973

From 2009 to 2020, Leo Messi has now amassed the same number of awards in the Spanish championship, while also collecting a record six European Golden Shoes.

And yet there is still plenty of football where that came from. Next season, Messi will be aiming for Pichichi number eight!
