Barça Academy project extends to Mexico City

The new FC Barcelona school opens its second location in Mexico, joining that opened in Puebla a season ago

FC Barcelona’s sports school system, the Barça Academy, is continuing its commitment to Mexico as a strategic market for its international expansion. After the opening of Barça Academy Puebla last August, from next year there will be a new location in Mexico City, situated in the facilities of Reforma Athletic Club.

This will be the 53rd international project for the Barça Academy, with 26 in America. Of them, 9 are in the USA and 6 are in Canada, plus three in Colombia. Mexico, like Brazil, will now have two sports academies.

The Mexico City Barça Academy will be situated in the Northeast of the capital city, and will have 2 full-size football pitches with natural grass, allowing for a maximum capacity of over 800 athletes. The football school is aimed at boys and girls aged between 6 and 18 years of age, who will be able to enjoy one 3-day preparation programme and another 2-day programme.

The training sessions will begin in the first week of January 2020, although beforehand there will be different activities and selection trials. In the coming weeks a Barça Academy Clinic will be held in Mexico City, in which the youngest participants will be introduced to the sporting training process under the Barça Academy model.

The latest project is a product of a five-year relationship between FC Barcelona and their local partner, Catalunya Sports. In the last year more than 3,500 children have enjoyed the clinics that have been held regularly in cities such as Guadalajara, Monterrey, Querétaro, Mexico City, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Acapulco and Cancun. Over 750 young people are expected to enjoy these sports camps in the summer of 2019.

Fifty-three permanent Barça Academy projects in all five continents

Barça Academy are FC Barcelona's own football schools for boys and girls, and which focus on the comprehensive education of its pupils. The model has been exported internationally, the idea being to expand the Barça brand and teach the rest of the world about the club’s philosophy and values.

The schools work with their own, unique system based on the same methodology that Barça uses from its youngest academy teams through to the senior team, encouraging a creative and attack-minded style of play indispensably combined with the teaching of values: respect, humility, effort, ambition and teamwork, with proven success.

FC Barcelona currently has a total of 53 Barça Academy projects around the world, plus more than 180 campuses and 50 clinics, in 56 countries on all five continents, involving more than 45,000 children in the different activities that they run.

The Barça Academy projects are divided into Barça Escola Barcelona, the Barça Academy Pro in Haikou (China) and New York (USA), Barça Residency Academy Arizona (USA) and the 49 Barça Academy in all five continents.
