Barça away kit to bring back 1979 design, in homage to La Masia's 40th anniversary

The new kit, which will be available to fans from July 9 at official sale points, will use the colour yellow and incorporate a diagonal ‘blaugrana’ stripe.

The FC Barcelona away kit for the 2019/20 season pays tribute to La Masia, the youth academy that is currently synonymous with teamwork, young talents and the future of the Club, on the 40th anniversary of the creation of this famous residence for players at the historic country farmstead of Can Planes. The new jersey will be yellow, with a diagonal stripe in the traditional ‘blaugrana’ colours, in a throwback to the away kit worn by Barça in 1979.

Fans will be able to buy the shirt exclusively from the Barça Store at the Camp Nou between 10pm and 11pm today, and the first 500 to purchase the garment will also receive an exclusive gift. From July 9, the away kit will be available to all fans at Barça Stores and the usual sales outlets worldwide.

One of the distinctive elements of the new shirt, which also features a trim on the sleeves in the club’s emblematic colours, will be the V-neck collar design, which is finished at the back of the neck by a vertical strip featuring the stripes of the Catalan flag, to emphasize the link between Barça and Catalonia. The away kit is completed by two shorts options, in yellow or blue, and yellow socks, with a ‘blaugrana’ strip including Nike’s swoosh and the word ‘Barça.’

La Masia, a symbol of Barça’s unique style

La Masia symbolises the past, the present and, above all, the future of FC Barcelona. It is where the Barça Way, admired worldwide, is developed. It is a unique place that has also kept true to the club’s multi-sport roots, bringing through players in several professional disciplines besides football.

On La Masia’s 40th anniversary, Nike and FC Barcelona wanted to pay homage to this symbol of the club, where some of the best players in history have honed their craft and served as examples for future generations.

“It is not an accident that La Masia has given the world so many great players,” said Sergi Roberto, one of the FC Barcelona players. “It is a special place with a unique philosophy and I am pleased this new away kit highlights the academy. Forty years of work at La Masia really is something worth celebrating.”

“Barça’s away kit from ’79 is a cult classic and with us wanting to pay homage to La Masia, it made perfect sense to use a kit from its founding year as the starting point,” explained Pete Hoppins, Nike Football Apparel Senior Design Director. “What you get is this beautiful vintage Barça design merged with all the benefits of modern technology. La Masia has produced so many iconic players and it remains an honour to produce kits for them.”
