Meeting with international representatives of UNICEF

Josep Maria Bartomeu and Jordi Cardoner host delegation led by Gérard Bocquenet, the organisation’s Director of Private Fundraising and Partnerships

As part of the series of meetings between FC Barcelona and Unicef in recent weeks, this Tuesday Josep Maria Bartomeu and Jordi Cardoner welcomed a delegation headed by Gérard Bocquenet, the organisation’s Director of Private Fundraising and Partnerships.

The meeting in the president’s office was also attended by members of the FC Barcelona Foundation’s executive board, as well as other important UNICEF representatives, including Carmelo Angulo, the president of the Spanish UNICEF Committee; its executive director Javier Martos, and Anna Folch, president of the Catalan Committee, who already visited the club recently to assess the work done by the two organisations over the last few months.

New agreement on the horizon

During the meeting, Barça and UNICEF started discussing the renewal of their alliance, which will be settled in 2016, and started planning activities to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the agreement next September.

After the meeting, the representatives of the United Nations agency were invited to watch the Champions League game with Roma from the Presidential Box.

300,000 beneficiaries worldwide

Since 2006, FC Barcelona has been donating 1.5 million euros a year to UNICEF to support projects for child development around the world. The two organisations are currently working on programmes to teach values through sport in China, Ghana, South Africa and Brazil.

Last season, these projects reached 300,000 children. In China, work was conducted in 250 schools and 21 children’s centres in 13 provinces in order to improve education and the protection of children.

The aim in Ghana was to improve schooling rates through the promotion of sport and play as a mechanism to attract children in underprivileged areas to attend class.

The work in South Africa has been to improve education and reduce dropout rates, and to support teachers in such areas as reproductive health, drug consumption and gender equality.

Brazil has seen the implementation of the second edition of the ‘Doors open to inclusion’ programme, which is being run in fifteen cities and aims to guarantee the participation of disabled children in sport.

In parallel to this work, last February, Barça and UNICEF promoted the ‘1in11’ project to raise funds for educational programmes in Indonesia, Nepal and Bangladesh. An art auction for pieces by such artists as Hirst and Murakami was able to raise more than 3 million euros, meaning that FC Barcelona was able to donate more than 4.5 million euros to UNICEF last season.
