Centenary and farewell to San Mamés

On Saturday, Barça play their 100th official match at the ‘Cathedral’, and also the last before Athletic Bilbao move to their new stadium César Rodríguez is FCB’s highest scorer at the legendary ground

Athletic Club v Barça on Saturday will be the last ever meeting between the Basque and Catalans clubs at the legendary stadium, which is being demolished this summer after almost a century of existence. It also happens to be the one hundredth time that Barça will have played there.

The 99 matches

The visits to San Mamés have been as follows: 81 in La Liga, 14 in the Copa del Rey, 1 in the UEFA Cup, 2 in the Spanish Super Cup and 1 in the Copa Presidente, an official competition that was organised by the Spanish Federation in the 40/41 season. In those encounters, Barcelona have 28 wins, 22 draws and 49 defeats, with 139 goals in their favour and 186 against.

César Rodríguez, top scorer

Those 139 goals include plenty from César Rodríguez. The great striker has the FCB record at San Mamés with 8 goals. He is followed by Mariano Martín, Basora, Bakero, Stoichkov and Saviola, who have four each.

Tricky trip

The ground has always been a difficult one for Barcelona. In the league, they have only won 22 of their 81 games in what is known as the ‘Cathedral’. But 12 of those wins have come in the last 23 visits.

Also friendlies

So this Saturday brings an end to many memories for Barça at the old San Mamés, where they have also played 19 friendly matches, winning one and losing 15.
