Sonia Bermúdez, five-time champion and the 'pichichi'

The forward claimed her fifth league title (three of them were with Rayo) this Sunday and she finished the season as the league's top scorer for the second consecutive year

Sonia Bermúdez is the record woman for the FCB Women’s team. With the league title won this Sunday in epic fashion at the San Mamés, the Blaugrana forward secured her fifth domestic league title – three with Rayo Vallecano and two with FC Barcelona.  In addition to the title, she’s the league’s top scorer for the second year in a row, along with Natalia (Rayo Vallecano). She’s scored a total of 21 goals this season.

“The comeback was incredible”

As her team-mates celebrated the title, Sonia explained that “it’s beautiful and special to win the league in the last game of the season in front of 25,000 fans.” For her, the key to defeating Athletic Club was having the right mentality: “we knew how to manage the match psychologically. They had the advantage of playing in front of their fans, but we were better prepared mentally.”

Sonia, who admits that Barça were “not the favoured side” coming into the match, continued: “we knew that we couldn’t afford to not win in any of our matches during the second half of the season, we are very competitive and we made sure that we put pressure on Athletic Club each week.”

Now the Cup

With the league title already won, Barça will now turn its focus on the Cup. It’s a competition that Sonia looks forward to with a great enthusiasm: “it’s been years since I’ve won it, it would be great to win a double – it’s something that no team has managed to do. Now we want the Cup.”
