FC Barcelona reach their seventh Cup semi-final in eight years

On three of the previous six occasions the Blaugrana have reached the final of the Copa del Rey

FC Barcelona sealed passage to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey this Wednesday evening. It’s an occurrence that members and fans are used to seeing that in the last eight seasons FC Barcelona have reached the semi-finals on seven occasions. This year, Barça’s rival will come out of the quarter-final tie between Real Sociedad and Racing. In the last six of Barça’s semi-final berths, the Blaugrana have gone on to the final on three occasions.

Getafe, Valencia, Mallorca (on two occasions), Almeria, and Real Madrid were Barça’s semi-final rivals since the 2006/07 season. Only in the 2009/10 season, against Sevilla, were Barça eliminated from the competition before the semi-final round.

Barça haven’t lost the first leg of a semi-final tie

In the past six editions of the Cup, Barça have never lost the first leg of a semi-final tie (three victories and three draws), and they reached the final in the 2008/09, 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons after eliminating Mallorca, Almeria and Valencia, respectively. The Balugrana won the title against Athletic Club in the 2009 and 2012 finals.

They were unlucky in the semi-final ties played in 2006/07 (Getafe), 2007/08 (Valencia) and 2012/13 (Real Madrid).

2007/08: FC Barcelona - Valencia (1-1 and 3-2)

2008/09: FC Barcelona - Mallorca (2-0 and 1-1)

2010/11: FC Barcelona - Almeria (5-0 and 0-3)

2011/12: Valencia - FC Barcelona (1-1 and 5-1)

2012/13: Real Madrid - FC Barcelona (1-1 and 1-3)
