With only six days to go for the start of the World Cup in Brazil, the FC Barcelona players are using this final week to prepare for the big tournament. The final training sessions, events and even international friendlies occupy the players’ respective schedules.
Argentina are intensely looking forward to the World Cup, as Messi is the indisputable leader of the national team. Sabella’s men will play their first match on June 15 against Bosnia Herzagovina. But before their debut match in the tournament, Argentina will feature against Slovenia in an international friendly.
On Thursday a statute of Leo Messi was unveiled in the neighborhood of Recoleta in Buenos Aires. The FC Barcelona forward shares a space with two Argentinian football legends: Gabriel Batistuta and Diego Armando Maradona. The statues, which were built to scale, were created by Fernando Pugliese, and they were commissioned for the 20th anniversary of sports channel TyC Sports.
The Chilean national teal, led by Alexis Sánchez, have arrived in Brazil. The team managed by Jorge Sampaoli, who are in Group B with Spain, will make their debut in the tournament on the 13th of June against Australia.
The Chileans made the trip to Belo Horizonte – their headquarters for the group stage of the competition – earlier this week. One of the first things the team did upon arrival was to take the official team photo with the 23 footballers and the coaching staff.
Brazil will close out their World Cup preparations with a match against Serbia. The host nation, with Neymar and Dani Alves in its ranks, will kick off the tournament against Croatia next Thursday.
In addition to Brazil, Spain will also close out their World Cup preparations with an international friendly. Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergio, Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc and Pedro will feature against El Salvador in Washington, DC, on Saturday. Alex Song’s Cameroon will also close out their World Cup warm-up with a match against Moldova. Both Spain and Cameroon will make the trip to Brazil after their respective matches.
