The FC Barcelona B team came away with a hard-earned point at El Sardinero. The players somehow held up to a Racing team that continually threatened throughout the second half but repeatedly couldn’t break through Barcelona’s defensive wall, and its stellar keeper Adrian Ortola.
The match started off fairly even with few scoring chances for either side. The only real opportunities came for Racing. Ortola saved a shot by Francis in the fifth minute, and a dangerous free kick by Grimaldo sailed high in the eleventh. At the other end, Barça’s Adama moved quickly and with ease on the right side, but he had difficulty getting the ball into the middle where the attackers could do their work. Throughout the first half, head coach Eusebio’s defence was well-organised and showed virtual impenetrability except for a Kone header that went just over the bar in the 40th minute.
The second half picked up in intensity. First, Bagnack prevented Kone from getting one in and then immediately Ortola made an excellent stop on Iñaki, both in the 48th minute. The two sides began to take more risks. In the 70th minute and with more space to work, Miguelez went in on Ortola and fired one well high. And another tricky ball by Soria was off target. Racing was getting fired up.
At the same time, Barcelona began to suffer. Adama went over to the left to try and mix things up. In the final minutes the Barça managed to neutralize Racing by keeping possession. There was an occasional threat to the Santander defence, but they did not give in. An impossible head ball by Bicho sounded the alarm, but there was little time for anything except a final scare by Kone from point-blank range.
