Goals from Asisat Oshoala and Toni Duggan gave FC Barcelona Women the win on an historic day for LaLiga Iberdrola, as they bested Atlético Madrid in front of a record crowd of 60,739 fans. The Wanda Metropolitano provided a terrific atmosphere, and the two goals in the second half led Barça to a 0-2 away triumph that puts them just three points behind their rivals for the title -with goal average in their favour.
After a cagey start to the big game, Barça withstood some initial Atletico pressure and had a good chance to take the lead. Oshoala shot wide with her effort, however, and the first half ended goalless.
Oshoala opens the scoring
She enjoyed better luck in the second half. Barça had come close with shots by Leila and Martens that were saved by Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Lola Gallardo, before Oshoala struck off a corner in the 65th minute for her fifth goal of the season.
Duggan seals the wié
Once ahead, Barça found more space on the counterattack. Andressa Alves lost out to Gallardo in a one-on-one with with quarter of an hour remaining, but shortly after her unsuccessful effort, Toni Duggan found the net. She put in a cross from Leila that had been deflected by a defender, having come on six minutes before in place of Oshoala.
The win keeps FC Barcelona in the title hunt with six games remaining. On Wednesday their focus turns to the Champions League, and a quarter final at the Miniestadi against Norwegian side LSK Kvinner.
