12 consecutive quarter final appearances

FC Barcelona hold the record in the Champions League for consecutive appearances in the last eight of Europe’s top club competition

FC Barcelona have made it through to the quarter finals of the Champions League for the 12th successive season, a record in the competition. No other European side has achieved what the blaugranes have achieved over the last dozen years and on Friday Ernesto Valverde’s team will find out their quarter-final opponents and their two possible rivals should they make it to the semi-final stage of the Champions League.

Over the 12 seasons Barça have overcome tough opponents to get to the last eight of Europe’s top club competition. In the last 16 they have knocked out Celtic, Olympique Lyonnais (twice), Stuttgart, Arsenal (twice), Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan, Manchester City (twice in a row), Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea last season.

Now the team face what has been the most difficult challenge in recent seasons: reaching the semi-finals. Atlético Madrid, Juventus and Roma have all ended Barça’s run in the competition at the quarter final stage in the last three seasons.
