Xavi Pascual’s Barça side will take part in the basketball Copa del Rey in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria starting on Thursday. The quarter-final game against Valencia Basket will have a guest on the shirt, the logo of the ‘Scholas Ocurrentes’ organisation. The entity established by Pope Francis will appear in the middle of the Barça shirt during the entire competition.
FC Barcelona, via the Foundation, are working with Scholas Ocurrentes to promote values in education via various schemes. One example is giving the network of educational centres access to the teaching materials based on sport and Barça, as well as the online version of the ‘FutbolNet’ project and various in situ editions of this programme which promotes positive behaviour in Mozambique and Argentina.
Scholas Occurrentes is a global network of schools promoted by Pope Francis and its aim is to encourage integration at schools around the world, with a special focus on those with limited resources. The project is looking to use new technologies to set up a global classroom for knowledge transfer between countries in which art and sport will play prominent roles as catalysts of social cohesion and peace. At the moment the project connects with over 400,000 schools.
