Rival Watch: League defeat for Bayer Leverkusen ahead of FC Barcelona visit

The German side go down to a 2-1 defeat away at Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga before their decisive home clash with Barça on Wednesday in the Champions League

FC Barcelona conclude the group stage of this season’s Champions League on Wednesday at 8.45pm CET with a trip to Germany to take on Bayer Leverkusen. Top spot in Group E is already assured after their excellent 6-1 demolition of AS Roma on Match Day 5 at Camp Nou but for the Bundesliga club there is still all to play as they are still involved in a three way battle with Roma and BATE Borisov for a place in the last 16.

The Germans will go into the game at the Bay Arena against Barça having lost this weekend away in the league at Hertha Berlin. Roger Schmidt’s side went down 2-1 to the club from the capital, Darida putting the home side 1-0 up in the 7th minute only for Javier Hernández to equalise for Bayer before the break. In the second half Brooks grabbed the winner for Hertha on the hour mark and the defeat leaves Leverkusen in ninth place in the Bundesliga, 19 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

One of the other candidates for second place in the group, Italian side AS Roma, were also in action on Saturday. Rudi Garcia’s team were held to a 1-1 draw at Torino, Pjanic appearing to have won the game for the giallorossi with an 84th minute strike before former blaugrana Maxi López salvaged a point for the home side with a penalty in the final minute of the game. The Roman club are now in fifth place in Serie A with 28 points from 15 games.
