On his visit to San Francisco, vice-president Jordi Mestre stopped past the local FC Barcelona supporters club in the area from where he watched the latest league match against Villarreal, accompanied by a number of its members. Mestre presented a Barça jersey to commemorate the visit.
The Penya Barcelonista de San Francisco currently has almost 100 members. Since its foundation in 2011, it is the most socially active supporters club on the west coast of the United States.
Despite the vast time difference (the match against Villarreal kicking off at 8.00am local time), the supporters from the Golden Gate city were not about to miss the important game. While Barça were not able to gain all three points, the 2-2 draw means that Luis Enrique’s side are now nine points clear at the top of the league.
