FC Barcelona 0-0 RCD Espanyol: Luckless derby

A fine performance from the women, with chances flowing from start to finish, is thwarted by an ultra-defensive Espanyol

The women’s team’s winning streak in the league has been broken by a 0-0 draw in the local derby with Espanyol at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.

The blaugrana ladies dominated the game and even missed a penalty on 70 minutes and hit the bar in practically the last move of the game, but eventually had to settle for a point.

Confident football, and very clear in its ideas, was the tonic from the start, and while the chances flowed for FCB, the visitors didn’t manage anything of note until Eli brought out a fine save from Paños on the edge of half-time.

The blue-and-whites continued to cause trouble after the break, but the introduction of Hamraoui and Mariona for the final half hour, and particularly Candela nearer the end, stirred up the Barça game and all the meaningful traffic was again heading in the direction of the Espanyol goal.

Not even when Losada sent her penalty onto the woodwork did frustration set in, and Martens, Leila and Ainhoa Marín all had great chances before the three points finally looked to have been settled as Mariona pounced on a rebound but sent her shot straight onto the crossbar.

It had been a wonderful performance, but sadly all that was missing was the goal, and the result means that Barça are now three points adrift of leaders Atlético Madrid, who beat Athletic Club 3-0 on Saturday.
