FC Barcelona to face Olympique Lyon in Women's Champions League quarter finals

Fran Sánchez's side couldn't have been handed a more difficult task at Friday's draw as they are matched against the winners of the last two editions

The draw for the quarter finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League was held this Friday in Nyon, and FC Barcelona have been paired with Olympique Lyon. The first leg in France will be on March 21 or 22 and the teams will meet again at the Miniestadi a week later on March 28 or 29.

It’s about as tough a draw as the Catalans could have got. Olympique have won the European title a record four times, including the last two editions.

While Barça negotiated the round of 32 with a 6-0 aggregate defeat of Norwegian side Avaldsnes, and then beat Gintra Universitetas of Romania 9-0, Olympique crushed Medyk Konin of Poland 14-0 and BIIK Kazygurt of Kazakhstan 16-0.

This is the third time in a row that the Barça women have made it into the last eight, and the target is to make the semis for a second successive year.

If they do, they’ll be meeting the winner of Manchester City (England) v Linkoping (Sweden).

The other two quarter finals will be Montpellier (France) v Chelsea (England) and Wolfsburg (Germany) v Slavia Prague (Czech Rep).

Comments by FC Barcelona captain Laura Ràfols

“We were hoping for a bit more luck but we’ve got the hardest opponent of all. But we’ve got two games to play, and we’ll try to do the best we can over there to bring a decent result back to the Miniestadi, where we’ll need as much support as we can get”.

“They’ve lost in the quarter finals before, so they’re not unbeatable. They’re clearly a very good side, but we’ll compete to the end, there can be no doubt about that”.

“If we want to get to the final we have to beat the best. It’s going to be a difficult game but we’ll fight all the way. What we really need is for people to come to the Mini and help us get through the quarter final”.

“They’re a very complete team, whether that’s in defence, midfield or attack. But we can hurt them. It’s so important for us to have a good game at their ground.”
