WOMEN'S FOOTBALL PREVIEW | FC Barcelona v Arsenal

The current European champions begin the defence of their crown with a heavyweight tussle before an expected capacity crowd at Estadi Johan Cruyff, kick off 9pm CEST

Barça and Arsenal are currently two of the most in-form teams in Europe. Leaders of their respective leagues, they play each other tonight in Estadi Johan Cruyff - a true clash of the titans to inaugurate the new Champions League format. Undoubtedly the outstanding fixture of the first round of group stage matches, the current European champion welcomes an English opponent with international stars in their ranks such as the forwards, Miedema, Mead and Little.

Our first opponent

The 'Gunners' were also Barça's first ever opponents in the Champions League. Back in 2012, Arsenal were a much better outfit, going through to the next round with an aggregate 7-0 score. The most recent meeting was a friendly in London, when Barça ran out 5-2 winners.

Good news

After a superb start in the Liga, with five wins from five games (35 goals scored and only 1 conceded), Barça is preparing for Europe's premier competition in great spirits, even more so when four players - Sandra Paños, Jenni Hermoso, Leila Ouahabi and Andrea Pereira - returned to the pre-match training session after injury. Only Andrea Falcón remains on the treatment table now.

Recognition for Barca's achievements

UEFA will hand out last season's best player awards for the Champions League to Alexia, Paños, Paredes and Jenni Hermoso before the match, a great way to acknowledge last season's achievements, inside what is expected to be a full capacity Estadi Johan Cruyff.
