No reward in the UEFA Youth League opener. Barça U19, the competition's most successful side, lost 2-1 to Feyenoord in their opening European fixture. Pol Planas' youthful side improved after the break and pulled one back through Nil Vicens, but were unable to overturn a 0-2 deficit.
Unfortunate start
Barça dominated possession at the Johan but struggled to create chances early on. Before the 10-minute mark, a mistake playing out from the back allowed Zinhagel to beat Eder Aller with a fine finish into the far corner (0-1, min 9).
Oscar Gistau twice came close to levelling, first hitting the bar from the edge of the area and then forcing De Mol into a save. However, Feyenoord struck again on the counter, with Schaken making it 0-2 in the 22nd minute.
With Iu Martínez providing the main threat down the left, Barça continued to push but went in two goals down at the break.
Barça push for a comeback
Barça improved defensively in the second half and gradually increased the pressure. Nil Vicens struck the post with a volley from outside the area with 20 minutes remaining, before substitute Nuhu Fofana won a penalty.
Vicens converted from the spot (1-2, min 76) to give Barça hope. The blaugranes pushed hard for an equaliser, with Fofana firing narrowly wide and Joan Inglés also going close, but Feyenoord held on for the win.
