Barça Rewind: The biggest ever win in official competition

Tarragona were on the end of an 18-0 hammering

Back in 1901, the first staging of the Copa Macaya, an early forerunner of the Catalan football championship, took place.

The tournament began on January 20 and ended on April 14, and was originally scheduled to be played between Santanach, Franco-Española, Espanyol, Tarragona, FC Barcelona and Hispania.

However, on the eve of the competition, Santanach withdrew, leaving just five teams. Two of them, Tarragona and Franco-Española didn’t even manage to score in their eight games.

On March 17 of that year, Tarragona hosted FC Barcelona at the Velodrome. It was a game that the 600 supporters present, the players, and referee, Chaperón, wouldn’t forget in a hurry.

Gamper scores nine... twice!

Just over a month beforehand, Barça had won 13-0 in an away fixture at Franco-Española with soon-to-be club president, Joan Gamper, scoring an incredible nine goals.

Against Tarragona in what was their next match, the blaugrana again reached double figures. Only this time, they managed a scarcely believable 18, with Tarragona not mustering a single goal in consolation.

Over a century later, it remains Barça’s record win in official competition. What’s more, Gamper helped himself to another nine goals, with a hat-trick from Black, a brace from Parsons and Witty and one each from Terradas and Mauchan completing the scoring.

As a side note, it’s worth mentioning that Gamper scored another eight in Barça’s 14-0 win over Franco-Española three weeks later!
