FC Barcelona Lassa 88-54 Cverna Zvezda: A boost for confidence

Best defensive display of the Euroleague season so far provides massive buzz going into weekend visit of Real Madrid

Barça Lassa stormed to victory in Friday evening’s Euroleague clash with Cverna Zvezda, a game that already looked well won in the first half and that they closed out with an emphatic 26-5 in the final period. Ribas (18), Tomic and Koponen (16 each) led the scoring against a team that was 10-14 coming into the game.

Dominating the defensive rebounds, Barça were 17-12 up at the end of the first period, and with Heurtel running the show, they set about dismantling the Serbs in the second. A Tomic slam-dunk put them 31-19, and not even a ten-minute interruption to sort out the damaged backboard could stop the flow.

Barça saw out the remaining two minutes of the half with nine uncontested points, having homed 75% of their 3-point attempts.

Cverna Zvezda were considerably better in the third period, and had managed to reduce the deficit to 13 by the half hour, but the home side came flying out for the final quarter and a massive 20-1 streak killed the game.

The 54 points registered by Cverna Zvezda was the lowest of this season’s Euroleague, and although Barça’s 8-17 record means they are all but mathematically out of the playoffs, this result will have come as a massive boost ahead of Sunday’s ACB Clásico against Real Madrid (Palau Blaugrana, 6.30pm CET).
