Barça's La Masia stars in ESPN report

The U.S.-based cable sports network has released "La Nueva Masia," an in-depth look at FC Barcelona's Youth Academy

The ESPN produced programme ‘Fuera de Juego’ about football around the world broadcast last Thursday a special called ‘The new Masia’, dedicated the to the football academy at FC Barcelona. The football show is shown from Monday to Friday on ESPN Latinoamérica and ESPN Deportes in the USA and it chose Barça for one of its special programmes looking at the footballing model that has become a reference point around the world.

In this special programme, an important show in Latin America, presenter Fernando Palomo, accompanied by technical analyst Álex Pareja and the Mexican former player Tato Noriega, examines the essence of Barça’s football academy. The first part of the programme is composed of three reports: the first is called ‘La Masia DNA’; the second is focused on the ‘rondo’ as the philosophical backbone of Barça’s football; and the third was dedicated to the challenges facing youth academies such as La Masia in the face of the ever changing football market.

Figures from the youth academy at FC Barcelona appear in the programme such as Jose Mari Bakero, Jordi Roura and Guillermo Amor. The first team player Sergi Roberto also appears as does B team member Carles Aleñá, both of whom came up through La Masia. Javier Mascherano also appears, give his view on how a player from outside the youth system has to adapt to the FC Barcelona style.

The programme will be repeated next week during the Christmas holidays with a potential audience of 20 million viewers in South America, Central America and the USA.
