President Bartomeu with Antoni Poveda at the press conference in Sant Joan Despí / GERMÁN PARGA - FCB

Plan of the future project

The mayor of Sant Joan Despí, Antoni Poveda, and the president of FC Barcelona, Josep Maria Bartomeu, were in Sant Joan Despí this morning to present the plans for the new Ciutat Esportiva, which among other features will include the new Miniestadi.

The process was given the go-ahead last March when 73.3% of the members voiced their approval of the new Espai Barça at a referendum, part of which was the transfer of the Miniestadi to the Ciutat Esportiva, while a new Palau will be built on the site that it previously occupied.

The new ground will be constructed on a 26,811 m2 site that the club purchased in 2013 next to the current Ciutat Esportiva training ground, meaning that the whole future facility will be 162,905 m2, which is 26% larger than it is at present.

Work on the new Miniestadi will begin in 2016 and it should be ready for use in the 2017/18 season. The modern, sustainable venue will have 6,000 seats and meets LFP requirements for second division matches and also those of the UEFA Youth League and UEFA Women’s Champions League.

FC Barcelona will also be providing parking spaces outside the stadium and improving access both for pedestrians and public transport users.

The project also includes the rehabilitation of a listed building, Can Felip, located next to the Miniestadi and which will be used by the club.

Sant Joan Despí Town Council approved the project last week, and this modification to the General Metropolitan Plan (PGM) will now be officially presented to the general public, whereupon a Plenary Municipal Assembly will have to provide its definitive approval, as will the Town Planning Commission of the Generalitat.

Josep Maria Bartomeu

“With the construction of the new Miniestadi in the Ciutat Esportiva we have taken an important step in the future restructuring of the Club’s assets following the members’ approval of the Espai Barça at the referendum last March”

“I’d like to thank Sant Joan Despí Council for their collaboration. We were right to choose this town as the location for the Ciutat Esportiva. I congratulate the previous directors for such a wise choice. We feel at home in Sant Joan Despí”.

Antoni Poveda

“We took on the proposition made by FC Barcelona, we worked on it together, we presented the proposal to councillor Santi Vila and now, with this new plan for the restructure of the area, the Council has been able to respond to the wishes of Barça”.

“The different activities in Sant Joan Despí, in this case those of FC Barcelona, fit perfectly into the model of the city we want”.

The new Miniestadi will be ready in 2016/17 by fcbarcelona
