It went down to the wire but it ended in victory for the blaugranes in a more than difficult away fixture. Winning in Istanbul against Fenerbahçe is never easy but for Xavi Pascual’s team side it was the perfect antidote to the weekend’s league defeat against local rivals Joventut. The 78-80 win in Turkey allows Barça to take control of their group with a 4-0 record putting significant distance between themselves and the team coached by Zelimir Obradovic who now boast a 2-2 record. Oleson, Doellman, Tomic and Navarro were all key figures in the blaugranes victory which continues Pascual’s side excellent run of form in Europe.

Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto 31-45 FC Barcelona

Copa del Rey (Round of 16) Tuesday November 4

Barça are into the last eight of the Copa del Rey after a comfortable win in Puerto Sagunto. Perhaps the fact that almost all of the team had only just got back from international duty was to blame for the slow start, with the game tied at 7-7 after ten minutes before Barça finally got into gear and led 16-22 at the break.

With Entrerríos posting an especially impressive performance, Barça never looked under threat in the second half and gradually built up a bigger and bigger lead to eventually end with 45 goals, their highest tally of the season so far.

Barcelona B also made it into the last sixteen, playing on Wednesday night at home to one of the strongest teams in the country, ABANCA Ademar León. In a gallant display, the youngsters managed to fight back from six goals down to take the game into overtime, where they eventually went down 31-36.

Spanish and European champions FC Barcelona cruised through to the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey against minnows Mosteiro Bembrive, who play in the third tier Division 2B. There had been huge anticipation in the town on the outskirts of Vigo after their local club defied all expectations by making it into the Round of 16, with the venue switched to a different pavilion to accommodate the fans clamouring for tickets.

But what they saw was their team get an absolute battering. There was a gulf in class between the sides, and the first quarter of an hour saw Barça fly into a 6-0 lead, eventually winning it 12-2, their biggest ever win in the competition. Bateria and Lozano both registered hat-tricks as the Catalans eased their way into the last eight.
