Majority support for the Qatar Sports Investment

The agreement with the Qatar Sports Investment group to sponsor FC Barcelona’s football jersey through the Qatar Foundation was ratified by the Members General Assembly. The Club members overwhelmingly supported the 177 million euro five-year deal.

‘Camp Nou without smoke’ implementation

The Assembly unanimously approved the ‘Camp Nou without smoke’ initiative. After months of campaigning and informing Club supporters and members, the smoking ban at the stadium will take effect on January 1, 2012.

Another measure that was approved by the Assembly was to eliminate the nets behind the north and south goals. The board of directors acted on the petitions from several members to remove the nets to improve the view of the pitch.

Inauguration of the New Masía. Oriol Tort Formation Center

On October 21st the New Masía. Oriol Tort Formation Center, located in the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, was inaugurated. The New Masía’s opening event boasted attendees from the first football team, youth squad players, the board of directors and representatives from influential Catalan institutions, including the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Artur Mas.

Gold medal for Pep Guardiola

The Catalan Parliament’s Bureau awarded Pep Guardiola the gold Medal of Honour. The Barça manager received the award on September 8th during an event that recognized his athletic career and the values of honesty, hard work, willpower, team work, respect and personal growth.

Alliance with Tecent WEIBO

Seeking to consolidate the Club’s worldwide social media strategy, Barça and Tecent, principal ISP in China, came to a strategic agreement to promote the Club in the Asian country. The Club and the Chinese company will collaborate to develop Barça’s brand in the China, which will allow Barça to reach a new massive audience and generate income.

Agreement with Google+

FC Barcelona strengthens its leadership in the new technologies field with the strategic agreement made with Google. The Club was amongst the few selected companies and organizations to have a page in the worldwide launch of Google+'s Pages service. This was Google+'s first agreement in Spain, and it effectively made FC Barcelona the only club in the Professional Football League (LFP) present during the launch of Google’s new service.

Alliance with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Barefoot Foundation

FC Barcelona, through its Foundation, closed various collaborative deals with globally recognized foundations. During the United States tour this summer, FC Barcelona’s alliance with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio was made public. The Club is also working Shakira’s Barefoot Foundation to bring education to vulnerable children.

FC Barcelona Foundation’s work this year has been extensive. Besides the aforementioned initiatives, the Club is also collaborating with the Interamerican Bank of Development (BID), and working with the ‘Enviamos el Hambre a la Porra’ (Let’s Send Hunger to Hell), and the ‘Somos lo que hacemos, somos lo que comemos’ (We are what we do, we are what we eat) initiatives, amongst others.  

Member Solidarity Day

The latest Club social event this year was the first ever Member Solidarity Day, coinciding with the return leg of the King’s Cup match at the Camp Nou against Hospitalet. More than 33,000 supporters were able to enjoy the game for free thanks to the members that freed up their season pass seats so that schools, NGOs, associations and social organizations could come to the stadium for the first time.

Mahmud Abbas' visit

During 2011 the Club aimed to reinforce its governmental and institutional ties. President Sandro Rosell received consuls and ambassadors from Brazil, Israel and France. However, one of the most important visits was Mahmud Abbas’. The president of the Palestinian National Authority visited the Club this summer to see FC Barcelona in action.
