Speaker Biography: 

Prof. Dr. Werner Helsen is full-professor in Motor Learning and Control at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences of the KU Leuven, Belgium. He is Head of the Perception and Performance laboratory. His research interests focus on the visual control of voluntary movement as well as on the development and acquisition of expert perception and performance. He has published > 100 scientific papers in international peer-review journals. As from 1999, he has been appointed by UEFA & FIFA as a sports scientist and a training expert for the match officials' performance training in professional football. In this respect, he was actively involved in 5 European Championships (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016) and 3 World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010) as well as for the major courses and international tournaments organised in this respect. Since 2009, he is chairman of Topsportslab, a spin-off of the K.U.Leuven focusing on performance enhancement and injury prevention in professional football and field hockey. Since 2015, UEFA invited him to participate in an expert panel ‘Fitness for Football’ that is organising workshop for football coaches all over Europe. He is a former professional football player, having played for over 25 years in the Belgian national leagues, as well as in the national youth selections. He was also involved 4 years as head-coach of football teams in the semi-professional second and third national league.
