ARUP SPORT and TALLER D’ARQUITECTURA RICARDO BOFILL

Arup is on the biggest architecture and engineering studios in the world with a specialist department dedicated to sporting architecture. The company have taken part in the development of well known stadiums such as the Sport Hub in Singapore and the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, with capacities for over 50,000 seats. They are presenting their proposal with the help of the Catalan architectural studio of Ricardo Bofill, the man behind projects such as Terminal 1 at Barcelona Airport or the Hotel Vela.

BIG and IDOM and BAAS Architects

BIG, Barjke Ingels Group is currently one of the world’s most renowned architectural studios.  Based in Copenhagen, this young studio is developing projects around the world, such as the future corporate facilities of Google in California and the 2nd tower of the World Trade Center in New York. In this team, ACXT are the specialists in sports, being the architecture department of the national IDOM company, which successfully concluded the Project, Management and Direction of the New San Mamés in Bilbao, where the team was able to play all of its league games in the stadium without being affected by the construction work. The third party responsible for the team is the Catalan office of Jordi Badia, BAAS Arquitectos, which has specialised in recent years in rehabilitation projects for office blocks and historical buildings of major heritage value, such as the Bòbila School in Cambrils and the Can Framis Museum in Barcelona.

GENSLER is on the most prestigious American firms in the field of architecture and engineering. With regards to sporting architecture they have taken part in the design of various stadia in North America and bring vital experience leading stadium projects such as the extension of Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Corinthians’ new stadium in Brazil and the FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. They are teamed with the OAB studio, where the architect Carles Ferrater leads a team who have a worked on several local and international projects such as the Paseo Maritimo in Benidorm, the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya and the Mediapro building in Barcelona.

HKS is a US firm who are one of the most experienced studios in the world when it comes to sporting architecture. They have worked on projects such as the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium, the AT&T Stadium which houses over 100,000 spectactors and other innovative and modern facilities. They are working on another big project, the future home of the Minnesota Vikings. They will be working besides Australian studio, Cox Architecture, designers of AAMI Park Stadium and the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. The local touch is provided by Batlle i Roig Architects, one of the most recognised outfits in recent years who have designed projects such as the corporate headquarters of Massimo Dutti in Tordera, the Multi sport centre in the Parc la Ciutadella and the New Market in Calafell.

AFL Architects is one of the UK’s leading Sports Architects working for the likes of Liverpool FC, Manchester United FC, Chelsea FC. Currently they are completing the new 48k seat Athletics Ashgabat Stadium in Turkmenistan for the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games AIMAG 2017, and recently won a competition in Russia for FC Kuban’s new 45k Stadium in Krasnodar. The team is completed by Mateo Arquitectura, led by Josep Lluís Mateo, who are experienced in restoration projects such as that of the Ninot Market in Barcelona, the entrance to the Prague National Museum and the New Catalan Filmoteca.

NIKKEN SEKKEI + Joan Pascual i Ramon Ausió Arquitectes

The Japanese firm Nikken Sekkei, with more than 100 years of history behind them, are one of the most important architectural and engineering studios in Asia. They were the architects behind the Saitama Super Arena, Niigata Stadium and the Tokyo Skytree, all in Japan. Local expertise is provided by architects Joan Pascual and Ramon Ausió who have a long list of achievements in the city of Barcelona in residential projects, offices and hotels such as Diagonal Zero.

POPULOUS + Mias Arquitectes + RCR Arquitectes

Populous is one of the most prestigious sporting architecture firms in the world. They have been part of projects such as the Olympic Stadium in London, the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg and the Emirates Stadium in London. The local element consists of two firms with both local and international reputations. The studio led by Josep Mias have worked on projects such as the corporate building iGuzzini in Barcelona and the Barceloneta Market in the city. RCR are a creative firm who have worked on the Soulages de Rodez Museum in France and the Bodegas Bell-lloc in Palamós.
