A memorable night at the Bernabéu. In Pep Guardiola’s first season as manager, Barça annihilated Madrid with a 2-6 win in the Spanish capital. The victory would go down in the annals of Spanish football history as one of the most convincing and one-sided wins ever in El Clásico. Barça’s superiority over Madrid was so overwhelming that the visiting side never lost its nerve, even when they were behind, knowing full well that the goals would come. Perhaps the most striking image of the match was one of Puyol kissing his captain band, which was the Catalan senyera [Catalan flag], after scoring Barça’s second goal. Barça’s victory at the Bernabéu was a prelude of things to come in the 2008/09 season: Barça’s historic and glorious first-ever treble, the League, the Cup and the Champions League.
