At the press conference to present Tito Vilanova as the new manager, the director of football, Andoni Zubizarreta, explained why he chose the man to replace the outgoing Guardiola. “Why Tito? Because he’s brave, it’s a huge, demanding challenge, because of where we’ve been and where we’re going, it’s huge. He’s capable, he knows the idea and he has experienced the club from within. As Pep said, our success until now is partly down to him.”
JordiRoura will be his assistant and Aureli Altimira his physio. Zubizarreta insisted that staff changes will be kept to a minimum. “Juan Carlos Unzué will no longer be goalkeeping coach. We haven’t decided who’ll replace him, or who will take over the management of the Juvenil A team. We’ll let you know the organigram when it’s decided”.
Dani Alves staying
Tito Vilanova has told the Club that he only plans to reinforce the defence, particularly a left back and a centre back. Zubizarreta expanded on this by saying that “I coined the phrase ‘you don’t comment on or broadcast negotiations.’” But he was willing to say a little about Carles Puyol, whose contract ends next season. “Soon we’ll be sitting down for talks” he said.
As for any possible departures, Tito Vilanova was insistent regarding two players. “Dani Alves is staying. There is no other possibility. He’s a very important player, one of the best signings we’ve made. And if Keita wants to stay, he’ll stay … But at a Club like Barça, if a player comes and says he wants to go, then he has to go”.
He also commented on Montoya, Bartra, Muniesa and Dos Santos: “There are a lot of players in the reserves who could be promoted under different circumstances. Who plays for the first team depends on the number of players we have and what happens in the preseason”.
