The union of club players and sympathisers makes it possible to arrange social and sporting activities and events that vindicate the club’s history and guarantee the right resources to ensure that the Group endures in its social and caring role. The values that define the entity are Barça, friendship, solidarity, respect and memory.
The ABJ was constituted in 1959 and was one of the first organisations of its type in Europe. It currently has more than 900 members, most of which are no longer active players from each of the football categories. The other members are sympathisers, Barça fans that want to feel close to the players and their social projects. Since 2003, the President of the ABJ has been ex player Ramon Alfonseda, who has 5 vice presidents: Josep Moratalla, Tente Sánchez, Ferran Olivella, Eusebio Sacristán and Carles Puyol.
Help for ex players the basic aim
The main aim of the ABJ is to work to ensure a dignified standard of living for all former players on the basis of financial, employment, medical and educational support. The group also forges links between ex players and has become the point of union with the living history of FC Barcelona. Therefore, apart from promoting and disseminating the Barça sentiment, the ABJ also contributes to the promotion of football values on the basis of the experience of its members.
Sports activities and social projects
The group offers a training space for former players at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and has different teams that play in official competitions, charity matches and events to promote the club. In 2006, it set up the “Get hooked on sport” project to contribute to the practice of sport and the prevention of the consumption of drugs by young people. Since 2010, the ABJ has arranged every year the Barça Players Award, by which all of the club’s fans support an initiative to distinguish the first team player who has behaved in the most exemplary fashion over the season.
The ABJ forms part of the Spanish Federation of Veteran Football Associations (FEAFV) and the European Former Players Association (EFPA).
