The two young basketball stars, 19 and 20 years old respectively, will join the FC Barcelona first team squad under Xavi Pascual
Creus: "They attracted our interest not only for their youth but also for their tremendous quality"
Alex Abrines will wear the number 10 shirt and Marko Todorovic number 14
Marko Todorovic and Alex Abrines were presented as new members of the Barça Regal squad 2012/2013 on Tuesday morning in the Ricard Maxenchs press room. Both players were delighted at this new stage in their careers. Their youth – 19 and 20 respectively – means that they will quickly benefit from the training facilities at the Club. The press conference was also attended by the Board member in charge of basketball, Joan Bladé, and the director of basketball Joan Creus.
Keen to learn
Both players thanked the Club for the opportunity to join FC Barcelona and compete with the very best. Alex Abrines told reporters: "I’m very happy. I’m really excited and I’ll give 100% to win trophies. I’ll be training hard every day to win the confidence of (coach) Xavi Pascual and play”. Meanwhile, Todorovic explained: “I wanted a team that aspires to the top and this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I’m not afraid but I know that I have to work hard to win the respect of the Club”.
Abrines defined himself in the following words: "I play in the number 3 position but I’m developing towards number 2. I move the ball well, jump well and shoot well from distance”. For his part, Todorovic revealed: "I like to play with my back to the basket but I have to improve my shooting, especially the three-pointers”.
Todorovic and Abrines also explained that they’ll be looking to learn from Erazem Lorbek and Juan Carlos Navarro in particular.
Director of basketball, Joan Creus, has high hopes for these two young players: "Abrines will help us in the outside game, he’s intuitive and we hope that he can finish off his development. Marko will fit in well to our project”. Creus confirmed that both players will go in at the deep end: “They’ll join the senior squad in the ACB. However, depending on the squad, the coach will decide who plays”.
Creus went on to clarify the size of the Barça Regal squad for the 2012/13 season and stressed the need for strength in depth: “It’s a very long season. This year we have eight game amore than last year and so we’ve expanded the squad a little. We need more in order to face such tough competitions”.
