The Dallas Mavericks are coming to Barcelona two years after Barça Regal’s magnificent last second win against the Lakers in a game between the champions at the time of the NBA and Euroleague. Pascual’s side had the benefit of more match practice, but still showed the potential of the European game in front of a packed Palau Sant Jordi (92-88).
Mickeal (26) and Navarro (25) led the Barça scoring, while the Los Angeles franchise was led by Pau Gasol (24), Bryant (15) and Odom (12). Barça Regal’s win raised many an eyebrow around the basketball world, and the Texans will be well aware of what happened two years before when they meet on October 9.
Barça Regal have won two games against sides from what is considered the strongest league in the world. In 2006 they were also victorious against the Philadelphia 76ers (104-99), featuring the likes of Allen Iverson and Chris Webber, making them only the second European side ever after Maccabi Tel Aviv to defeat an NBA side.
Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies, first opponents
Barça first played an NBA side in 1989. In Rome, FCB faced the Denver Nuggets in the semi finals of the now inexistent McDonalds Open and were soundly defeated 137-103.
The margin narrowed in subsequent years. In 2003, in Barcelona, Barça featuring Bodiroga, Fucka and Jasikevicius lost to the Memphis Grizzlies and Pau Gasol, who scored 18 points.
Two games in Los Angeles
In 2008, Barça Regal were guests in Los Angeles against the two teams from the Californian city. They first lost to the Lakers 108-104, with Navarro getting 34 points. The day after they played the Clippers, and narrowly lost 114-109. Apart from the first ever game against the Nuggets, Barcelona have always managed respectable scores against American sides.
