Centre back's buyout clause set at 500 million euros

FC Barcelona and Pau Cubarsí have reached an agreement to extend the centre back's contract with the club through to 30 June 2027. The player's buyout clause has been set at 500 million euros.

The defender put pen to paper this Thursday morning at an event also attended by FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta; first vice-president Rafa Yuste; the director responsible for youth football, Joan Soler; and sporting director Anderson Luis de Souza “Deco”; youth football general manager; and youth football coordinator, Toni Hernàndez.

20 senior appearances

Cubarsí's breakthrough into the first team has been nothing short of spectacular. It seems hard to believe that it was only on January 18 of this year that he made his official debut in the Copa del Rey against Unionistas, and just four months later he has become an established part of the defensive setup, playing 20 games and winning the hearts of the fans. All of his performances have been outstanding, but the one that stands head and shoulders over the rest was his MVP winning display against Napoli in the Champions League at Montjuïc.

He has started 17 of those 20 games, with a tremendous 90.98% pass accuracy rate, and such has been his impact that he was also quickly snapped up for international duty in Spain's friendlies against Brazil and Colombia. At just 17 years and 2 months, he became the youngest defender ever to appear for La Roja.

Culer since 2018

Born in 2007 in Estanyol (Girona), Cubarsí came to Barça from Girona FC in July of 2018. He started the 2023/24 season officially as part of the U19 setup, but was used nine times by Barça Atlètic, with Rafa Márquez eventually opting to make him part of his regular squad.

In a very busy year, he also played a couple of games in the UEFA Youth League, and went to Indonesia to play for Spain at the U17 World Cup, joined at that tournament by his team-mates Héctor Fort and Marc Guiu.
